CLIMATE ACTION
We certify our commitment to environmental protection with some of the sector's leading awards. Among others, we have the ISO 14001 certificate - Environmental Management Systems and we assume the objectives of the carbon footprint section registered by the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge of the Spanish Government, through the ISO 14064 certification. In addition, in 2023 we have launched our first Circularity Plan, which we expect to be ready during this season.
Responsibility towards the environment is one of the values of Mar Hotels and, for this reason, every year we carry out training and awareness-raising courses on the importance of contributing to the improvement of the environment in which the employees of our hotels and central offices participate.
RESPONSIBLE PRODUCTION AND CONSUMPTION
Water is a scarce commodity and we therefore ask our guests to help us to use it responsibly. In order to wash only what is absolutely necessary, we ask that towels are placed on the floor to avoid unnecessary washing.
At Mar Hotels we have replaced all single-use materials with reusable and recyclable utensils. In terms of plastic cups alone, we have saved an average of 350,000 units per hotel.
In all our hotels we have installed an awareness-raising area where our guests, together with the entertainment team, can sow and care for aromatic plants which are then used in our buffets.
In order to avoid the use of plastic bottles and to eliminate packaging in our processes, we have osmosis water machines and glass bottles in the rooms for our guests.
We have eliminated single-use amenities in rooms and bathrooms, opting for refillable and reusable solutions that are more beneficial to the environment. In this way, we avoid throwing away up to 25,000 containers per hotel.
With the aim of reducing water consumption in our hotels, all our showers have diffusers that save up to 50% water.
Energy savings thanks to the installation of presence and movement sensors can reach up to 60%. In this way, we prevent air conditioners and lights from running when you are not in the room.
UNDERWATER LIFE
From our animation department we carry out activities with clients to clean the island's beaches and we collaborate in initiatives to care for our sandy beaches.
SUSTAINABLE CITIES AND COMMUNITIES
In all our hotels we have procedures and guidelines for the selective collection and separation of waste with the aim of recycling 100% of our waste.
Since 2019 we have electric vehicle charging points in the car park of Mar Hotels Playa Mar & Spa and Mar Hotels Playa de Muro Suites.
For the printing of informative, signage and commercial materials, we use ecological and recycled materials to print them.
At least 30% of the food we use in our bars and restaurants is fresh or local produce.
We have installed refrigeration machines with heat recovery systems to improve energy efficiency in the kitchens and buffets of our hotels.
In all our restaurants and snack bars, we collect and separate used oil for recycling so that it can be used in the manufacture of soaps, lubricants and ecological fuels.
We have drafted and implemented a procedure for the recycling of hazardous waste in hotels and its subsequent treatment.
AFFORDABLE, NON-POLLUTING ENERGY
As part of our commitment to the production of clean energy, we already have photovoltaic panels in all our establishments, generating up to 4,100 kW per day.
The electricity contracted in our hotels comes entirely from renewable and environmentally friendly sources.
In recent years, we have replaced all the conventional light bulbs in our hotels with energy-saving LED lighting.
QUALITY EDUCATION
At Mar Hotels we have the #MarTalent programme, in which we are committed to training our staff and mentoring young people who join our teams.
DECENT WORK AND ECONOMIC GROWTH
One of the most ambitious projects of our CSR programme #MarChange is the Mar Hotels Restaurante Escuela. In collaboration with Fundació Deixalles and the #Incorpora programme of Fundació la Caixa, we train people at risk of exclusion free of charge and offer them the possibility of a contract.
